The Importance of Nutrition

5th Nov, 2017

It's time to have a frank talk about nutrition and some of the worst things that people do to their bodies. Taking the natural nutritional supplements that Vivacity offers is a great step in the right direction, but if you eat the wrong foods along with them, they aren't going to do their job. Every person is different, with different genetics, body type, culture and environment. All of these factors can have a big impact on what the "correct" diet is for each of us. Some people do best on a low-carb diet while others may do fine on a vegetarian high-carb diet. The fact is, what works for one person may not work for the next. At Vivacity, we want you to live the best life possible in every aspect. You can live vibrantly and feel better than you ever have. What we are guiding you through, is a lifestyle revolution that will transform you and help you realize your true vivacious potential. Here are some facts that all reputable nutritionists agree on.

Added Sugar is Terrible

We all know this, even without any education in nutrition. There are a few fine points to be aware of, though. Most of the sugar we add to food are sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup. These sugars are devoid of any nutrient value, other than the energy we get from the sugar itself (this energy is also available in every other healthy food we eat). If you eat too much sugary food, you will be lacking in proper nutrition because you replace good food with sugary food.

That's not the main problem, however. Sugary foods, mainly those with high fructose content, are being implicated as a leading cause of obesity, cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. Fructose is metabolized by the liver and over time, processing so much sugars cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides, abdominal obesity and high cholesterol. Triglycerides make our brains resistant to a hormone called leptin, which effectively makes us want more sugar. Eating an excess of added sugars sets up a relentless biofeedback loop in the brain to keep eating sugar, getting fatter and eating even more sugar. As a side note, milk fat is 98% triglyceride.

Artificial Transfats Are Very Unhealthy

Trans-fats, also known as partially hydrogenated oils, are made by mixing good unsaturated fats with hydrogen gas at a high heat to make them resemble saturated fats. They are called trans-fats because they are good fats that have been "transformed" into other fats. The reason corporations who don't care about your health produce these fats is because they end up costing less (higher profits) by having a long shelf life, and suitability for commercial frying and transport. The easiest way to think if it is to compare canola oil to shortening.

Trans-fats raise the bad cholesterol and lower the good cholesterol in your blood causing inflammation, insulin resistance and obesity. In the long term, consumption of trans fats raises the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, depression and many more diseases. We recommend you avoid trans-fats as if your life depends on it.

Refined Carbohydrates Are Bad

There are a lot of conflicting opinions on carbohydrates, but whether they are good or bad for you overall, we can say this for sure. Refined carbohydrates are worse than unrefined (complex) carbohydrates.

Many foods that are high in carbohydrates, such as grains, also have many healthy qualities that offset the carb content. However, when good healthy grains are commercially processed, most of the nutrients are destroyed and there is not much left but easily digestible, but vapid glucose. Basically it boils down to the same discussion that was brought up in the sugar paragraphs above. It's a good idea to cut down on eating grains at all, but it is very clear that whole grains and unrefined carbohydrates are, at least, a lot better than their refined, processed counterparts.

Weight-loss “Diets” Are Harmful, a Lifestyle Change is Necessary

"Diets" are ok for a short term weight loss result, if you can stick to them. So, if you really have to fit into a wedding outfit, do the diet thing, but for a permanent weight loss solution, diets are the enemy and often do way more harm than good, actually causing you to become more unhealthy and overweight in the long run.

The only way to give you actual, long-term results in weight loss is to adopt a lifestyle change. Instead of eating less carbs, or less fat, or only lemons and watermelon rind, change the way you think. Instead of saying "I need to lose weight", it is much, much better to say "I need to eat healthier". If you do this, your weight will be exactly what it's supposed to be and you will feel great!
